Check out my blog Venerate Your Dead, a death-positive ode to ancestor veneration rituals and spirit festivals around the globe, with a focus on what is eaten during those sacred days.
Please note that it is still in progress.
As an Anthropology alumnus I always welcome an opportunity to bring what I have learned to the table, especially in the literal sense. I love cooking and I love feeding people.
Some of the most fascinating facets of culture are found in veneration (honouring and remembering) and the various ways death and funeral rites are conducted. Food is a life source that can be prepared to heal or to sacrifice, to the living and to the dead, elements which are often a central aspect of veneration.
It is widely believed that the recently departed are not dead, but rather in transition to the next life, and some believe they can summon the “dead” just by mentioning the person’s name. By continuing to hold space for ancestors through ritual and tradition, the memory of loved ones can be kept near and dear.
Regardless of your personal beliefs, I invite you to observe those of others. I am an advocate of the death positivity movement and have created Venerate Your Dead to share what I have learned. Please check it out and follow
